Simulation Settings

The Simulation Settings window shown in Figure 1 can be opened by pressing the Simulation options button from the top toolbar. Note that the simulation settings can only be adjusted when the simulation is in the Reset state. The changeable simulation settings are:

  1. Start epoch (simulation start time and date). By default, the start epoch is the current date and time.
  2. The simulation duration. By default, the simulation runs for 1 day. An alternative to specifying a fixed amount of time is to tick the Run Forever checkbox. In this case the simulation will continue to run until the user manually pauses the simulation.
  3. Selecting Run in real-time forces the simulator to synchronise time steps with the PC clock.
  4. The Update Interval setting adjusts the fixed interval at which the simulation is updated. Adjusting the interval to be shorter than the default value of one second will yield more accurate results, but can have an adverse effect on the time the simulation takes to run, and also requires more memory.
  5. The interval at which the simulation state is stored to cache can be controlled using the Sample Multiplier setting. If this setting is set to 1, the simulation state will be stored at every update interval. If it is set to 2, it will only be stored every other update interval. Therefore, this setting allows memory in the cache to be conserved for simulations with a long time span.
